What different key counts change

Range Useful for Likely constraint
49 keys Very simple close-position chord demonstrations Low bass and high melody may collide quickly
61 keys Basic two-hand chords and many beginner arrangements Limits may appear in wider-range pieces
76 keys More room for bass and right-hand separation Still not necessarily weighted or fully expressive
88 keys Standard piano range and broad repertoire Larger size, space requirement and often higher cost

A 61-key instrument with touch response can support many first-month tasks. Pianoforall's current FAQ recommends at least 61 full-sized touch-sensitive keys and a sustain pedal; it calls 88 weighted keys preferable when budget and space allow. These are course-specific recommendations, not a mandate to buy a new piano before beginning.

Inspect your own instrument first

Press a note gently, then firmly. Does the volume change? Can you put one low C in the left hand while playing C–E–G around middle C? Does the stand wobble? Can you attach a sustain pedal of the right polarity and connector if you later need one? Use the guide for hand position before blaming hardware for tension.

Weighted versus portable action

Weighted keys can make dynamic control feel closer to an acoustic piano, but action varies widely. Portable unweighted or semi-weighted models can be easier to move and may be sufficient for rhythm-first learning. Try the actual instrument where possible; no brand's specifications, price or product rating is being asserted here.

Upgrade only when a limitation is real

Keep the instrument if you can complete a four-chord two-hand loop comfortably and adjust the volume by touch. Reconsider it if missing notes at the bottom prevent your arrangements, the action does not respond dynamically, or setup is physically unstable. If your budget is limited, prioritize reliable practice time over shopping for a perfect instrument. The adult first-month guide gives exercises that reveal those constraints.
