Setup checklist at the instrument
| Check | What to observe | Adjustment to try |
|---|---|---|
| Seat stability | Does the bench move as you play? | Stabilize it before continuing |
| Elbow space | Can the arms move without crowding your torso? | Shift seat distance slightly |
| Wrist | Is it persistently collapsed or held high? | Reset with a loose forearm, then try a few gentle notes |
| Shoulder | Are you lifting to reach keys? | Relax and check seat height |
| Feet | Can you sit securely rather than reaching precariously? | Support the feet as needed |
Two original relaxed-motion drills
Drill A — three-note landing: put right-hand fingers 1–3–5 on C–E–G with light contact. Press and release once without holding tension between notes. Check whether you can gently move your wrist after the release. Repeat on F–A–C only if movement remains comfortable.
Drill B — quiet walk: play C4, D4, E4, D4 in four quarter-note counts, with natural finger movement rather than an exaggerated stretch. Larger hands may use 1–2–3–2; smaller hands can choose other comfortable adjacent fingers. The point is fluid motion, not a prescribed perfect fingering.
Common tension warnings
Pain, tingling and lasting discomfort are reasons to stop, not a challenge to push through. A page of general educational advice cannot diagnose a physical issue. A qualified teacher can observe technique, and a healthcare professional can advise on persistent symptoms where appropriate.
Build breaks into the routine
Alternate a few minutes of keyboard work with listening, clapping or labeling notes. If you use a pedal, check that the leg can reach it without twisting your seat. For beginner equipment constraints see keyboard choice and for a gentle sequence see the first-month roadmap.
