Original eight-bar vocal sketch, no borrowed lyrics

In C major, use the following invented four-quarter-note melodic contour with a pause at the end of each phrase. All melody notes are in the octave around middle C; — means continue the preceding note, and rest means silence.

Bar Harmony Vocal beats 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 Piano action
1 C E4 / G4 / G4 / rest C bass 1, soft C chord 3
2 Am E4 / C4 / C4 / rest A bass 1, Am chord 3
3 F F4 / A4 / G4 / rest F bass 1, F chord 3
4 G D4 / B3 / G3 / rest G bass 1, G chord 3
5 C E4 / E4 / G4 / rest C bass 1, C chord 3
6 F A4 / G4 / F4 / rest F bass 1, F chord 3
7 G G4 / B4 / A4 / rest G bass 1, G chord 3
8 C G4 / E4 / C4 / rest C bass 1, C chord 3

This is an illustrative vocal melody with one quarter-note pitch per stated beat and a quarter rest on beat 4. The piano's chord on beat 3 may coincide with a held or moving vocal note. Do not add lyrics or assume a particular singer's comfortable range.

Create a workable arrangement

Choose the key by first humming the melody where it feels easy, not by forcing your voice into C. Begin with a spoken 1–2–3–4 count-in; sing the notes without piano, then hum while playing bass roots. Add the right-hand chord only after the phrases stay continuous. If the top note feels strained, use the transposition worksheet to move the whole sequence, not just the vocal melody.

Record and revise

Record one complete eight-bar pass, listen for three issues: the first syllable starts late, a piano fill covers the phrase, or the left-hand root disappears. Solve the largest issue in isolation. Keep your arrangement light; more notes do not automatically improve an accompaniment. Learn left-hand patterns only when the singing remains stable.
